The Oak of Saeul

The remarkable oak of Saeul is a sessile oak (Quercus petraea) located in the village of Hëlzent in Saeul, at the crossroads of the roads from Saeul to Reichlange and from Saeul to Calmus. Classified as a national monument since 1974, it is the most majestic oak tree in Luxembourg. The trunk, which is relatively short and crooked, bears a strongly developed crown with balanced proportions, which indicates that it was able to develop freely for at least several decades without being hindered by other trees in its proximity.

The oak is estimated to be around 280 years old. At the beginning of the 20th century, a market was held on this site, where seven other oaks stood at the time.

Beneath the tree is a station of the Way of the Cross, which was erected in 1920 (the year is engraved on the stone of the Station).
