BIKE RIDE to Pettingen

Jump to the activity

Today my parents, Emil and I are spending the whole afternoon in the commune of Mersch.

Our first stop is Mersch castle. To learn about the castle’s history, our parents have organised a little riddle. Then we go to the big playground on the other side of the road. Here we can run along the net bridge, climb up the tower and whiz back down the slide. Afterwards, we go to a bench by the lake and eat cakes and have a drink. As we do this, we watch the ducks paddling across the lake with their ducklings.

“What about riding to Pettingen on our bikes? There’s a fabulous, castle in ruins and a small playground there,” Mum suggests.

“Yes, please!” shout Emil, Dad and I happily.

“Maybe strange things happen at the castle!” Emil hopes. We all jump on our bikes and set off. The cycle path runs alongside the water and the railway tracks that go to Ettelbruck.

After a short time, we’re standing in front of the castle. The sun is slowly setting, soon it will be dark.

“We need to hurry,” Mum says. We look around the castle in ruins and then sit down on the edge of the old well. Behind us is a large, round tower.

“Once there was water all around the castle,” Dad explains. “Which meant it was well protected from enemies.”

“And what used to be in that tower?” my brother asks. He points to a large, round building.

“Perhaps a princess used to live there?” Dad muses.

“Yes, or a ghost,” I laugh.

“Exactly,” Mum says suddenly quite seriously. “There’s a story. Every year a damsel returns to the castle as a white ghost.”

Suddenly we see something white hovering over the courtyard. I stare at the round tower.

“The ghost!” Emil shouts. The white creature flies down the stairs and lands on the ground. I can feel my teeth chatter with excitement. My heart is beating like crazy. The ghost gets up again and flies back and forth over the grass. Emil hides behind me. He is shaking all over and his face is turning pale. Mum is braver and walks over to the tower. Suddenly we hear her sigh with relief. Dad laughs: “Kids, take a look! It’s just a big white handkerchief blowing back and forth in the wind.”

Phew! Relieved, Emil and I look at each other and laugh out loud.
